One day I had to drive from Austin to San Antonio. Already several times in the
past I got told how incredible this city is, but somehow I wasn’t really getting it.
It is a bit over an hour driving time from Austin to San Antonio, if you drive quick.
Coming closer to the city, it gives at a first look the picture of an average American
city, nothing impressive or worth thinking or wondering. Arriving at the house of my
friends my plan was very honestly going back to Austin within the next 3 hours. But
a new friend of my sister called inviting for dinner at a nice restaurant. I still wanted
to leave early, but I also was a bit hungry.
In the moment we arrived to the down town area, the picture of the city and its
atmosphere changed dramatically and I started getting some idea, that there must
be more than just some few nice looking buildings, restaurants and shopping
areas. And it all suddenly became a mix of Spanish-Mexican influence in middle of
a very modern American architecture, with old historical buildings kept well main-
tained and visible between everything else. Very soon I had to find out, that
San Antonio is THE PLACE with lots of lively Mexican-American history to it.
San Antonio is a true Mecca for history buffs. It played a pivotal role in the
entire American history. Its Spanish Colonial Influence started about 300 years
ago, when Spain started to rule and colonize the red natives. In 1718 the Fran-
ciscans constructed a mission, called San Antonio de Valero. During the following
years four more missions got added, and more and more settlers came to San An-
tonio for living. Neighboured Comanche and Apaches weakened Spain’s control
and ending 1794 the Mission de Valero changed into a Military installation, called
the Alamo. This became later the centre for the independency battles between
Mexico and Texas. The Alamo was the most important place in history when 1835
the courage of just 189 Texas soldiers helped keeping its position against 4000
troops at the bay for 12 days. The Alamo did fall, but some short weeks later Sam
Houston's forces could finally win the Battle of San Jacinto, achieving
Texas independency.
Today the Alamo Building locates down town in San Antonio. At night all is very
nicely lighted and there is also a little Plaza surrounding it, where bicycle carriage
drivers and horse carriages are waiting to show you around in the down town area,
specially by night. The Horse carriages are also beautifully lighted and decorated,
so that a real romance can happen. There are gorgeous places to view and every
visitor might be very impressed about all these lights and well kept decors. Here
you can also find the old city of San Antonio, which was a Indian village hundreds
of years ago. Surrounded by a wall for its security mainly for during the night, you
can explore several beautiful boutiques and other shops in there during the day
time. It is it worth visiting.
But the biggest attraction of all is the River Walk down town. Right at the
beginning, where you can join into the river boats, is a huge Parking Garage and
Shopping Mall with very nice, special shops in it with all the best merchandize on
display for all the new tourists coming in. Getting then down to the boats, you will
hear lively Mexican music and start feeling different.
Lot of water is floating under all the buildings down town, and since quite some
time a certain area of this river is getting used for creating nice intimate spots with
restaurants and shopping areas in between, bringing some fun for the “time off”
enjoying oneself. And since, it became today the biggest attraction of San Antonio,
there is no other city existing like that. Soon you may feel, that your reality changed.
Specially at night the atmosphere is extremely like fun-fun and leisure or holiday time,
mixed into an exotic Mexican dream-world of the last centuries, with colourful lights
and lightings everywhere, and dozens of restaurants and shops and beautiful San
Antonio River Walk Hotels on both sides of the river zone. Bigger boats curve
through gorgeous water channels, floating under beautiful bridges next to old trees
(one over 200 years old), and the drivers keep on explaining the buildings, the past
and also the present time situation for over 45 minutes long, meanwhile floating
along with all the passengers. Getting out of the boats, the only next sensation is
then the most close restaurant you can find, and there is nobody, who wouldn’t like
to sit outside directly at the river in middle of all this extreme atmosphere.
At the end is to say, there are 2 Mexican restaurants in the Down Town area, one
is the upper class “Soluna” Restaurant (Sun and Moon) with exclusive cooked and
presented dishes and drinks, and the Mi Tierra Cafe Y Panderia, open 24 hours a day
selling their own Mexican Breads, T-shirts and souvenirs, meanwhile the big
restaurant area itself is partitioned and very romantic, with lively Mexican Music
played by real Mexicans day and night. And all the River Walk Hotels in San Antonio
all together are giving San Antonio a real additional feeling of great atmosphere.
If you want to surprise somebody with incredible adventures full of excitement,
and you really like rewarding somebody with the absolute best to find holiday
entertainment full of wonderful impressions,
And now to the story of San Antonio:
First of all San Antonio has a military installation for the 5th Army with a National
Cemetery and the Academy of Health Sciences, which is the Army’s Basic School
for Medical Personnel. Nearby are three U.S. Air Force Bases: Lackland, Randolph,
and Brooks. Lackland is a real training base for recruits. Otherwise major compo-
nents of San Antonio’s economy are Education, Health Care and Medical Research,
Business and Financial Services. You will also find several Universities, which are
the St. Mary’s University, the Trinity University, University of the Incarnate Word,
Our Lady of the Lake University, St. Philip’s College, San Antonio College and the
University of Texas at San Antonio. A “Health Science Centre” of “The University
Of Texas” is also there.
Additionally is San Antonio the most popular tourist destination in Texas, and you
can always find High Class Hotel Services in San Antonio everywhere.
Next to the down town San Antonio hotels and the River Walk with all its historical
Mexican attractions, there are numerous Museums and several great Parks. The

professional symphony orchestra. Sea World San Antonio includes amusement
rides and animal shows, as well as marine animal exhibits. The San Antonio Zoo
with natural springs and rock cliffs, shows one of the largest animal collections in
the Southwestern U.S. and counts to the most popular attractions in San Antonio,

San Antonio (April), and the Texas Folk-life Festival In June. Talking about
restaurants and food, there are many good places spread out all over San
Antonio, several are pretty inexpensive, and the most liked local cousin is
featuring a mix of Texas and Mexican varieties.
